2 Points. 8 Games.

Ever since Harry Redknapp took over as Tottenham manager, he has repeated many times in interviews that when he joined, Spurs only had two points from eight games. Studs Up makes fun of it here. Now they have even created a shirt as seen in the comic. I wasn’t too excited when Redknapp was appointed but there’s no denying he has done a good job so far. Will reserve judgment until he gets a full season. If I was a Harry fan I might have gotten one for myself.

PS. Studs Up is a great comic strip for football fans.

What was next for Kyle XY?

I was hugely disappointed (and angry) when the series finale of Kyle XY ended in a massive cliffhanger and no real ending. But it wasn’t the writers’ or producers’ fault as they only found out that the show was canceled after they finished filming the third season.

I stumbled across this interview with the writer/producer of the show where she gave some answers to what she had planned for the show and its characters beyond season three. It’s not much but it is a pretty interesting read for Kyle XY fans.

thekopitiam.info: Filter Blog Posts by Tags

If you read a lot of blogs you sometimes can get flooded with information which you are not interested in. Since a single blog can cover all kinds of topics, subscribing to a blog feed will give you posts on all topics, even the ones you may not be interested in. Some blogs may provide feeds based on tags or categories which would narrow in down, but what if a combination of tags is needed? What if you could combine not only multiple tags but also across multiple blogs?

Well, with thekopitiam.info you can. Posts from submitted blogs are gathered and filtered into “channels” based on tags of the post. Each channel has its own feed so you read posts from all the submitted blogs on one particular topic.

thekopitiam.info

thekopitiam.info

If the provided channels do not meet your needs, you can create your own! And the custom channel will have its own feed as well.

Subscribe to the feeds in your favourite RSS reader and you will be able to only read posts that interests you. Of course the accuracy of the filtering really relies on the accurate tagging of the posts by it authors.

If you have any comments or suggestions about the site, I will be happy to hear them.

Twitter as a Real Time News Source

Earlier today I was having some problems with Google Reader and since I was having some internet connection issues just before, I wondered if it was just me. So I did a quick Twitter search and sure enough there were people complaining about Google Reader as well. Then I remembered last Friday night when I felt the ground shake for a good 2-3 seconds while at home, I wondered if it really was a earthquake as I didn’t think Victoria experienced earthquakes. But sure enough there was an earthquake as I found out again through a Twitter search.

It seems like Twitter is the fastest way to get real time news. Twitter was a major source of information during the Mumbai attacks. New agencies have caught on and many have Twitter streams which you can follow such as @cnnbrk, @bbcbreaking and @nytimes. There is even a new wire service that caters just for Twitter – @BreakingNewsOn.

WordPress Plugin: Auto Ping PPS

Project Petaling Street is a Malaysian Blog Aggregator. The site allows users to “ping” the site and have blog posts appear on the site. Usually when using WordPress, I would enter in the ping URL into the “Send Trackbacks” section before I publish a post. But this meant that the ping URL had to be entered for every new post and this was rather annoying.

So I have created a plugin for WordPress which automatically pings the site whenever a post is published. The ping URL only has to be entered once and can be changed easily if needed. The ping function can also be disabled for individual posts.

The plugin has only been tested with WordPress 2.7.1.

Introducing a New Malaysian Blog Aggregator: thekopitiam.info

I have been working on a small project with my free time . It is a Malaysian blog feed aggregator – utilising RSS or Atom feeds of blogs, it gathers posts from submitted blogs and sorts them according to its tags and categories. It also groups posts with similar tags together to form “channels”. It also provides feeds of these channels so you can use them in your favourite feed reader.

So take a look: http://thekopitiam.info

If you have a blog, feel free to submit it so it can be aggregated too. Also make sure you tag your posts accordingly so it can be filtered to the right channels.

I hope the site is useful to you as it has been for me.

Friday Night Lights – The Best Show You Are Not Watching

Friday Night Lights the movie is probably my favourite sports movie of all time. So when the TV series of the same name and produced by the same team (including Peter Berg) was announced a few years back, I was excited. And I wasn’t disappointed, it has become my favourite TV drama right now. The show is currently in its third season, awaiting renewal for its fourth season.

The original movie was based on a book and inspired by real-life events. However, the TV show is not related to the movie at all, as it is set in a fictional town of Dillon with new characters. The show revolves around the people of this town and their obsession with football.

Here are some of the reasons why I love this show:

  1. It’s a sports show. I am a massive sports fan, and enjoy watching almost all sports. A good sports movie is rare and a good sports TV show is even rarer. However if you don’t like sports or football, don’t let this throw you off cause:
  2. Even though the premise of the show evolves around football, it’s a lot more than that. It’s a family drama; where we meet the Head Coach Eric Taylor (the incredible Kyle Chandler) who struggles to juggle family and his high pressure job and the star running back Smash Williams (Gaius Charles) who knows football is the only way he can provide his family with a better life. It’s a teen drama, where backup quarterback Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford) is suddenly thrust into the limelight and out of his comfort zone, and his predecessor Jason Street (Scott Porter) has to deal with his life-changing injuries. And this is just the tip of the iceberg and so even if you are not a fan of football, I guarantee you can still enjoy the show.
  3. This show is also the most consistent show when it comes to the quality of the writing of the storylines. The realism of the show, when it comes to the different types of families and their problems to the teen pressures and love lives are the best I have seen on TV. Once you start watching the show, you will fall in love with the characters. The show is also not afraid to deal with issues such as drugs in sport, underage alcoholism and sex.
  4. I also cannot say enough about the incredible performances by the actors on this show. You will get sucked into the show and you are not human their performances do not trigger the emotions in you. Special mention goes to Connie Britton who plays Tami Taylor, supportive wife of Coach Taylor and mother of a rebellious teenage daughter. The show uses a very unique way to film their scenes and it makes me even more impressed with the actors:

The show’s producers decided at the outset to allow their performers leeway in what they say and do on the show. Though scripted like any hour-long television drama performers are given great leeway in the delivery of their lines and the blocking of each scene. If actors feel that something is not true to their character or that a mode of delivery doesn’t work they are free to change it provided they still hit the vital plot points.

The freedom that producers have extended to the performers is complemented by the fact that the show is taped without rehearsal and without extensive blocking. Camera operators on the show are trained to follow the actors rather than actors standing in one place and having cameras fixed around them. This allows performers to not only feel free to make changes but to feel safe in making those changes because the infrastructure will work around them. Executive producer Jeffrey Reiner described this method as “no rehearsal, no blocking, just three cameras and we shoot.”

  5. Hot girls! The young cast are extremely sexy and beautiful; from the cheerleader Lyla Garrity (Minka Kelly) to the Coach’s daughter Julie Taylor (Aimee Teegarden) to the bad girl of the school Tyra Collette (Adrianne Palicki). Not to mention Connie Britton is not too bad to look at either, if you are into older women. And I guess the girls will enjoy the guys of the shows too.

So if you haven’t watched the show yet, what are you waiting for?!
